GLACIER ROAD 1.377 - 2.800 m
The 15 km long Ötztaler Glacier road is one of the highest roads in the Eastern Alps, connecting Sölden (1,377 m) with the glacier ski regions in Rettenbach- and the Tiefenbach glaciers at over 2,800 m. Every curve of the road offers a new breathtaking view. The glacier tunnel is (tunnel patron Rosi Mittermaier) the highest road tunnel in the Alps, and connects both ski regions at an altitude of 2.800 metres and a length of 1,7 km.
Road and tunnel have been built to accommodate two lanes in each direction, and the average incline is 11 %, and therefore of no problem for cars or busses. Snow chains in winter months are advisable, as it can snow quite unexpectedly in these high alpine climates. The road is only open when considered not dangerous (avalanches). This can sometimes mean that a second road block is possible.
Toll: This in only exacted from non-skiers! All skiers with a valid ski ticket may use the road for free!
